Burberry is a hugely successful British brand that has, slowly but surely, gone global. With more than 500 stores worldwide, and a flock of celebrity fans, it's safe to say that Burberry has become a household name - even if you don't shop there yourself.

Originally founded in 1956 (making it 161 years old), Burberry has a long and rich history. It was originally a family owned business - all the way up until 1955 - and it has actually changed its name twice. In 1891, after moving the business from Basingstoke to London, many Burberry customers began calling the brand "Burberrys' of London". Eventually this name was formally adopted, and the brand officially changed it's name. This is why older Burberry pieces carry a "Burberrys'" label (as shown below). It was not until 1999 (so fairly recently) that the brand reverted their name back to "Burberry", most likely as part of an effort to expand the brand internationally.

Burberry is particularly famous for what we now call "trench coats", and this is because the brand actually introduced gabardine - the breathable water-resistant fabric used in coats, which was once an entirely new and revolutionary material. Thomas Burberry, the brand's founder, went on a PR mission that involved lobbying British generals to wear his gabardine coats. These coats then came to be known as "trench coats" because British officers wore the coats in the trenches during the First World War. They were, in fact, part of the official military uniform.

Burberry still make their famous trench coats, but the brand has gradually expanded its repertoire to include a wide range of luxury clothing and accessories. However, although Burberry still proudly calls itself a British brand, many of its products are no longer made in Britain. Only two Burberry factories remain in the United Kingdom, with most of the brand's clothing and accessories being produced elsewhere.

Since 2015, Burberry has consolidated its Burberry brands - Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London, Burberry Brit and Burberry Sport - into one entity. Everything that they now sell is branded simply as "Burberry", which helps to easily distinguish between newer and older pre-loved pieces.

Burberry is particularly good brand to shop for on the pre-loved market because the discounts can be really fantastic. If you are interested in shopping for authentic pre-loved Burberry bags then check out Stored and Adored's online store
